Fishing Reports for July 2, 2009

This report is a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

Oswego Area - Oswego River, Lake Ontario

Oswego River:

According to Larry Muroski of Larry’s Oswego Salmon Shop:

We have received some rain in the last couple of days raising the water level to 5,500cfs. All areas along the river are fishable. Activity has remained the same with bass, walleye and plenty of sheepshead throughout the river. Minnows, nightcrawlers, crayfish, leeches and tube jigs are good choices of bait. Anglers are finding catfish with nightcrawlers, chicken livers and cut shiners. Rock bass are taking twister tails, nightcrawlers and tube jigs and Wright’s Landing is producing some perch.

Lake Ontario report:

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

Conditions have remained about the same this week. Increasing salmon activity is being reported with some fair to good catches being taken in 100 to 200 ft. of water just west of Oswego. Look 50 to 100 ft. down and green e-chip flashers with Atomik green glow, green crinkle and hammer flies and white green dot spin Drs with the same flies are the ticket. Brown trout bite good one day and are uncooperative the next. Dream Weaver Super Slim spoons in glow green and glow blue alewife, chicken wing and diehard patterns are working well. Fish 30 to 60 ft. of water and look for bait.

Mexico Point - Little Salmon River, Lake Ontario, Mexico Bay

The lake fishing is beginning to show some improvement. Conditions have settled down and the lake is becoming more defined. Although the brown trout bite has been on and off, the salmon activity has been increasing the last few days. Look for the browns in 20 – 70 ft. of water. Take to the deeper water, 100 – 200 ft. and further out for the salmon action. Target bass on the shoals and rock piles all along the Oswego County shoreline.

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Salmon River/Pulaski area

There is little activity along the river this time of year.

Lake Ontario:

According to Woody’s Tackle:

The fishing continues to be rather slow in this area. Anglers are finding some browns, a few steelhead and the occasional salmon. Reports from the western end of the county are improving so we are looking forward to more activity here. Look in 20 – 60 ft. of water for browns and 80-200 ft. down about 50-60 ft. from the surface for salmon. Bass bite has been slow but the perch bite has been good off the points in shallow water with nightcrawlers and minnows good choices of bait.

Oneida Lake

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:

Oneida Lake fishing is good right now. You can find pickerel, bass, catfish and perch with a spinner and a worm being the bait to use. Walleye fishing is steady with good catches coming from the eastern end in 20 to 30 ft. of water. Trolling and jigging are working.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sandy Pond

According to Woody's Tackle:

The weed growth is becoming a problem on the pond but anglers are still finding some pike, bass and perch. Worms and minnows are good choices of bait. Walleye are still active especially in the south pond.
