Fishing Reports for March 19, 2010
This report is a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.
Oswego Area - Oswego River, Lake Ontario
Oswego River:
Conditions remain about the same with the water level running at 13,500cfs this morning. The high water makes fishing difficult to impossible in some areas along the river. Driftboat anglers are finding the water muddy making applications a bit more difficult. Steelhead and brown trout are both hitting on beads, stickbaits, worms, minnows, egg sacs and white bucktail jigs.

Salmon River:
According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
It may still be winter but spring is in the air. Fishing remains fair but steady in the Salmon River. No great days but we are getting a few; pre-spawn fish are always tough to catch. Things will just continue to improve over the next month.
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
Wednesday was another nice day. We had frost in the morning but with clear skies and plenty of sunshine the temperature reached into the 50's. We got mixed reports from anglers with some groups getting into fish, while others were not so successful. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville seemed to have produced the most action. Anglers reported getting into fish in the Lower Fly Fishing Area, Schoolhouse Pool, Wire Hole and Ellis Cove. Suggested patterns: Glo-bugs, estaz eggs, sucker spawn, rusher nymphs, caddis, black stoneflies, hare's ear, pheasant tails and woolly buggers have worked well for those anglers fly fishing. Egg sacs, trout beads and pink worms are working for those anglers float fishing or bottom bouncing.
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
Yesterday was a good day on the run. Anglers reported that most of the larger pools were giving up fish. Beads, bags, pink worms and glo bugs have all produced fish. The weather is beautiful and supposed to stay that way through the weekend. I would expect some great fishing the next few days.

The warmer temperatures this week with continue to erode the ice. Safety remains the priority on the lake and a few fish are not worth risking your life. Just a reminder that northern pike and walleye season have ended; open season is 1st Saturday in May through March 15.

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle:
With the warmer temperatures again this week, the ice has continued to deteriorate and we feel the ice fishing season is over for the season. Just a reminder that northern pike and walleye seasons have closed.
