Fishing Reports for July 3, 2008
This report a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.
Oswego River:
According to Larry Muroski of Larry's Oswego Salmon Shop:
The water level has been running between 3700cfs and 5000cfs the last few days. We have received some rain this week and although more is expected today, the forecast is mainly clear for the holiday weekend. The bass action continues to be good throughout the river and crayfish remain their favorite bait. Walleye and carp are active along the river and panfish can be found near the Marine Museum and the Coast Guard Station on worms, minnows and spikes. There is rockbass activity behind the steam station.
Due to the construction of the NYS Rte. 104 bridge, certain areas of the Oswego River will be restricted to boat traffic. Please watch for signs and buoys.
Lake Ontario:
According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
King salmon are showing up in good numbers along the eastern shoreline of Lake Ontario. The action this week has been steady. Salmon prefer to be in or just above the ice cold water. Local charter captains are finding the salmon from 90 to 120 feet down over 120 to 200 feet. Start early with white and green E-chip flies in front of a TG or green glow Atomik fly. When the sun gets high switch to some Spin Dr's in chartreuse and Mountain Dew with Atomik Hammer and Big Fin flies. Nk’s in the die hard and natural born killer pattern are working well on the higher rods. There continues to be a steady brown trout bite also. Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating.
The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to the Sunset Bay area along Lake Ontario, east of the city of Oswego.

According to Capt. Gerry Bresadola of B&B Sportfishing Charters:
July is here, finally. Kings are moving into the eastern basin and as the lake stratifies the summer bite begins. It is the same old advice that says find the bait and the fish will be close by. Spoons or flies all work, it is your choice. Bass are biting in the shallower water and browns can be found in cooler 60 degree and lower temperatures right off the bottom.

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle:
The river is typically quiet this time of year. The northern pike and bass fishing continues to be very good in the estuary.
On Lake Ontario, the thermocline is setting up down over 100 ft. of water. The kings are showing up in good numbers and brown trout are active in 60 ft. of water and they are reportedly good size. Bass fishing is better than we have seen in a couple of years toward Mexico Bay in 20-25 ft. of water and you can find perch all up and down the shoreline in 20-30 ft. of water. Live bait such as fathead minnows are working well.

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
Walleye seem to be everywhere, in the weeds, on the shoals, suspended with the bait, and on the bottom especially the "pancake" bottom. This is where we did our damage. Jigs and sonars slowly worked across the bottom in 34 ft. of water was the spot for us. You are also likely to find bass and panfish.

According to Dave Wood of Woody's Tackle and Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
The bass fishing on Sandy Pond has been good. The top water action has been the best. Most fish are being caught in 6-20 ft. of water. Also look for some northern pike along the deeper weedlines with crankbaits and spinners.
